New Car Markings, Hybrid Pilot Program Launched for SLC Police Department

Mayor Ralph Becker and Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank today unveiled a new look for Police Department vehicles. Not only will markings on the cars be different, but the Police Department is also launching a new hybrid program featuring Toyota Camry hybrids and two T3-Motion Electric Vehicles.

Mayor Becker praised the leadership of Chief Burbank in launching a hybrid pilot program for the Salt Lake City Police Department and remarked, “Moving to more sustainable vehicle use helps Salt Lake City achieve savings of both financial and environmental resources.”

The new black, white and yellow markings will be added to all new Police Department vehicles as they are replaced in normal fleet rotation.

“This new look makes our cars more noticeable in neighborhoods and out on the streets,” said Burbank, who noted that approximately 20 percent of Department vehicles are replaced each year. “Our annual rotation of cars created the perfect opportunity to redesign the look, as well as add hybrids to help meet City objectives under Mayor Becker’s sustainability initiative.”

Mayor Becker said the addition of hybrids to the Police Department’s fleet is one of many ways sustainability is being addressed city-wide.

Burbank said performance will ultimately decide whether more hybrids are added to the Police Department’s fleet. “We’ll be evaluating acceleration, handling, fuel economy and the like. If practical, we’ll add more,” he said, adding, “There are still a lot of questions to be answered, but I’m hopeful hybrid cars will assist with our financial and environmental concerns.”
